Athletic Species Revenant BackgroundThe world of Code Vein is a post-apocalyptic dystopia where half of the planetâs population was extinguished in one fell swoop known as the Great Collapse. The earth is now rend by colossal, glowing spikes called Thorns of Judgment, and ridden with horrifying creatures that are simply addressed as Terrors. However, the main setting of the game is within the isolated city of Vein, self-contained by an impenetrable barrier named the Red Mist which serves two primary functions: keeping the Terrors out, and the Lost and revenants within. Vein is home to three main species, all struggling to co-exist. There are the ordinary humans, now a particularly rare and coveted breed; they are frequently preyed upon by the Lost and enslaved by revenants, who treat them like little more than food. Many take shelter with Veinâs provisional government, where they are fed, clothed and protected in exchange for blood donations. The revenants are humans who had died and been implanted with the BOR (Biological Organ Regenerative) parasite, which revived them. Revenants depend on blood to survive, but they also have strength, speed, and a great variety of powers that exceed those of humans, as well as the ability to âdisperseââa false death triggered when the parasite senses that its host is at their physical limit, allowing the body to become like mist and re-materialize somewhere safe. With each dispersal, a revenant will lose some part of their memory, though most are so insignificant that the missing pieces go unnoticed. Reckless revenants who charge into battle and disperse excessively are prone to losing all memories of who they are. Revenants came into existence in the worldâs time of need, right after the Great Collapse. Countless people had fallen, including capable fighters, and the death and destruction would only rise if nothing was done. The BOR parasite had been created prior with the intentions of it being a medical miracle, but was stowed away due to its controversial effects. It was then uncovered and put to use during this crisis, and the ranks of the war effort began to fill with the resurrected. These newly-awoken revenants were tasked with fending off the Terrors, beginning their cycles of violent death and unrelenting rebirth. Revenants were only freed from this fate if they were pierced through the heartâthe only way for a revenant to achieve true death, reducing them to ashesâor became one of the Lost. The Lost are gruesome monsters incapable of thought and purely instinctual, driven by insatiable hunger. A revenant who goes too long without blood runs the risk of frenzying, in which they lose all control of their faculties and begin transforming into one of the Lost. This transformation may be halted if they are quickly fed with blood, but once they are completely transformed, there is no reversal. Most Lost are born from revenants, though humans whose bodies reject the BOR parasite will not awaken as revenants, but as the Lost instead. The Lost cannot be permanently killed, even if struck through the heart. With each death, they are revived into a monster further and further away from their original forms, eventually becoming entirely unrecognizable. By the time the game takes place, half of the city of Vein is overrun with the Lost, and the remaining revenants are at a lack for sustainable food sources. Mysterious white plants called bloodsprings pepper the city, bearing fruit-like vessels that act as a fulfilling substitute for human bloodââblood beads.â However, most bloodsprings have dried up due to pollution; the Lost give off a poisonous miasma that taints the air, and though humans appear unaffected by it, it is incredibly dangerous to revenants, as it can accelerate their bloodthirst and induce frenzy with prolonged and unfiltered exposure. The Lost and the miasma sharply reduce the available living space, and what blood beads can be scrounged up are often taken through the provisional governmentâs levy and thinly redistributed. Most revenants are left to scavenge desperately, sometimes abducting humans to feed off of, sometimes taking smaller and weaker revenants as thralls to search for food without putting themselves in harmâs way. Revenants will often fight for territory as well as blood beads, with the losing parties frequently joining the ranks of the Lost. In this world where only the strong will survive, everyone hopes for reform but only some strive to achieve itâand not all will live to see it through. PersonalityLouis was born to two loving parents who ran their own clinic on a remote island. Though his mother passed from an illness while he was still small, his father continued to raise both Louis and his older sister Karen. His father was frequently late coming home due to work, but remained a devoted parent, diligent in loving and caring for his children. He set a high precedent for hard work and kindness, and his children were instilled with those very same virtues. They both held immense respect for their father, dreaming of becoming doctors just as their parents had been... until the one fateful day that illness took him, too. With the siblings now orphaned at the tender ages of 10 and 14, they were taken in by relatives living far away in the city of Vein, where they would remain for the next decade to come. Ever the filial children, they both succeeded exceptionally in their studies, especially Karen. She was soon accepted on scholarship into a university tied to a military research center, where she pursued a degree in medicine. Louis was quick to follow in the exact same way. It was there that both siblings began their own research, and returned after surviving the Great Collapse. Louisâ innate philanthropy doubles as both his greatest asset and his Achilles heel. It is his love for humanity and desire to help others that drives him to study medicine, and though his intentions are always good, he does suffer from a bit of idealism. He wants to see the best in people, and though he is not naĂŻve, his optimistic tendencies have repeatedly led to heartbreak. When a dear friend of his had been suffering, his dogged reassurances to her and the desperate belief that all would end well resulted in more damage than good, and Vein suffered yet another catastrophe. Louis lost his life in this event, and reawakened a great deal later as a revenant. By this time, the Red Mist imprisoned the entire city, revenants relied on bloodsprings for nourishment, and Louis found himself utterly alone in this further-changed world. Wracked with guilt for being unable to save his friend nor prevent the calamity that followed, Louis roamed the infested streets of Vein and repeatedly threw himself into the heat of battle as a means of distraction. Eventually, as he came across more people in need, the caring disposition from his human life resurfaced and Louis was able to regain his humanity piece by piece. His goal ultimately became to ease the pain of both revenants and humans trapped within Vein, and began heavily researching blood beads and bloodsprings. He believed that if they could solve the revenantsâ food crisis, a number of other issues such as thralldom and human predation would unravel as well, leading to a better quality of life within the city. Louisâ individual actions quickly gained renown among the cityâs inhabitants, and when joined with other like-minded revenants, he became their unofficial leader. Rather than crumpling under that pressure, Louis instead thrived, empowered by being relied on. Thanks to having the goal of salvation for the people of Vein, he became a tireless worker, every effort bringing something more to his feeling of purpose. Though Louis feels his own worth best when in service to others, his sights once set are unshakable, and he will continuously prove himself until all othersâ doubts are washed awayâand even long after. Abilities & InventoryRevenants all hold a variety of abilities attributed to the unique compositions of their blood, called oneâs âblood code.â Louisâ blood code takes the name Prometheus, for the Greek Titan, an elder god of high intelligence and known as âa champion of humankind.â Prometheus is also credited with authoring the human arts and sciences, and is most notorious for defying the gods by stealing fire and presenting it to the humans for the betterment of their civilization. Louisâ individual combat style is officially described as well-balanced, but fragile. It thrives on speed and agility as well as dodging and parrying. He boasts gifts of self-acceleration, fire-aspected magic, and attack power that increases with each successful hit. While Louis can provide swift offense and decent support, he must remain vigilant so as to take minimal damage, as his endurance and survivability sit on the weaker side. All revenants are capable of using Blood Veils, which are wearable equipment that fall under four subtypes and function as both armor and a weapon. They are equated to a revenantâs fangs, or rather an extension of them, as they can be used to drain blood from an enemy through means of a special attack. Under the right circumstances, a Blood Veil will adapt form with its user to deliver punishing damage to a target, and simultaneously sap it of ichor. His possessions include:
